AIS-Salzburg Lions Kick Off the Fall Sports Season
September 24, 2025
With the new school year underway, AIS-Salzburg’s fall sports teams have wasted no time getting into action. Over the first two weeks, coaches have been evaluating their players and preparing for the upcoming Danube Valley Athletics Conference (DVAC) mid-season festivals on September 27th and October 4th.
Girls’ Volleyball
The girls’ volleyball program is once again thriving, with enough players to field both junior varsity (JV) and varsity teams. After securing a 2nd-place finish in last year’s DVAC competition, the varsity squad looks to stay competitive with a well-rounded mix of returners, JV promotions, and newcomers. The JV team will lean on experienced players to help guide a motivated group of newcomers from diverse athletic backgrounds.
“We have quite a few returning players combined with a few new girls who have some volleyball experience, rounded out by a good number of beginners who already show a lot of promise,” said varsity coach David Burns. He and resident assistant Ali Higham form this year’s girls’ volleyball coaching staff.
Boys’ Volleyball
The boys’ volleyball team heads into their first DVAC tournament on September 27th, facing the challenge of missing several key players. Even so, new additions bring fresh energy and plenty of potential to the squad.
“I look forward to seeing how the boys will put it all together and find a way to compete at a high level,” said coach Nick DeWitt. “I think it will be a fun team to coach this year.”
Leading the team once again is fourth-year player and senior student, Petr V. (right), who will play a key role in guiding his teammates throughout the season.
As a fun warm-up for the season, the boys’ volleyball team faced off in a mini tournament last Friday against a staff-and-RA squad. Teachers Mr. Gahan, Ms. Papapanagou, and Mr. Anderson, along with Athletic Director Mr. Burns, teamed up with resident assistants Cody, Ali, and Marrissa to challenge the players as they prepare for their upcoming DVAC festival.

Boys’ Soccer
The boys’ soccer team may be smaller in numbers this season, but the roster boasts a promising blend of returning players and new talent. With their first matches scheduled for this weekend, the squad is eager to put their skills to the test.
“I’m excited to see it all come together,” said coach Matt DeKryger. “Our fitness and ability to handle adversity while staying focused on our goals will be the key to our success this season.”
