.Student Life.Healthy Lifestyle Requirement

The Healthy Lifestyle Requirement (HLR) is an internal school program which is designed to ensure that all students are actively and regularly engaged in healthy physical exercise in an effort to establish habits of health which will be of benefit both now and in the future. Unlike most physical education programs, the HLR requires not only participation in weekly physical education lessons, but also measures a student’s healthy habits on a daily basis. This is more than appropriate in a boarding school setting.

Essentially, all students are required to earn a minimum number of health points each week of enrollment and the total at the end of a grading term reveals a letter grade which is placed on the official transcripts. Students earn health points through successful and cooperative participation in physical education courses, sports team practices, activities which are of a physical nature including skiing/snowboarding, swimming, aerobics, yoga, etc., and any other involvement which is physical in nature and improves one’s health.

Additionally, the school administration deducts health points for certain behaviors and incidents which are unhealthy. Students will quickly damage their grade in HLR through tobacco use, untidy rooms, tardiness, or poor nutritional habits. Therefore, a student who commits a tobacco use violation, for example, will find that their grade in HLR has been dramatically reduced and the only way to improve it is to earn more health points through extra physical exercise and involvement.
