The American International School-Salzburg offers a 13th year of instruction, otherwise known as a post-graduate year. Spending an additional school year at the high school level is not for everyone but can provide the extra academic preparation and maturity to enter university with more well-rounded credentials; assisting those who complete the program with greater chances of being accepted to the university of their choice.
Post-graduate students — having previously completed their high school diploma — are not restricted to meeting credit requirements as are students enrolled in other grades. However, as a boarding school, post-graduates are required to meet our load requirements. This means that all post-graduate students attend classes full time and are responsible for all of the academic expectations required of other students.
The administration has the ability to "custom fit" the post-graduate schedules to ensure that their academic preparation is optimal. For example, should a post-graduate student require extra preparation for the AP Calculus exam with the desire to enter the German national universities, we can enroll them in AP Calculus as well as other AP courses which will allow them to have the best chances for success and acceptance.
Post-graduate students can be full-boarders, 5-day boarders or day students as desired. There are no variations in the school’s behavioral expectations for post-graduates and they must remain below the age of 20 to maintain boarding status at our school.
