Athletics at The American International School-Salzburg is an integral part of community life. We work to instill involvement in the various school sports and in non-competitive sports as well. Success for our kids comes through learning commitment and being part of a "team experience." They learn not only skills which benefit them in competition, but our goal is to build "life skills" they will carry with them long beyond high school.
The mission of the Athletic Department at The American International School-Salzburg is to aid in the academic, emotional, and physical development of our students through the promotion of teamwork, sportsmanship, and athletic competition. The athletic program at The American International School-Salzburg is believed to be a valuable asset to the total education process; therefore, the program operates within the same objectives and goals of the overall educational program. Research has shown that athletics at all junior high and high school levels help to foster team building skills, problem solving skills, self-discipline, and self-confidence. Through the development of these skills it is believed that our student-athletes will become confident, contributing members of the school community.
Despite the small size of our student body, The American International School-Salzburg has developed a strong tradition of participatory athletics for all students. Based upon ideals such as striving for a common goal, leadership, sportsmanship, and love of the game, our students take part in regular competitions and tournaments in a variety of athletics sports.
The American International School-Salzburg offers athletic competition in the following sports:
Fall Trimester:
Boys & Girls Soccer
Golf
Boys & Girls Volleyball
X-Country
Winter Trimester:
Boys & Girls Basketball
Spring Trimester:
Baseball
Tennis
Golf
The school schedules competitions and tournaments with other international schools in our area (Austria, Switzerland, and Southern Germany) and with local Austrian club teams. Many of these international schools have created annual tournaments to which our athletes are invited. The American International School-Salzburg hosts tournaments in volleyball and basketball each year. Most athletic events take place over weekends and provide an extensive amount of travel for the athletes, combining the joy of travel with competitive activity.
The American International School-Salzburg encourages all students to participate in athletics each year and to attain the benefits of that participation. As a perfect balance to a challenging academic program, we believe that students appreciate the physical activity and learn good sportsmanship through athletics, ultimately assisting them in the desire to achieve their academic goals and become active and healthy members of our school community.
In the 2009-10 school year, AIS-Salzburg will become one of the charter members of the Danube Valley Athletic Conference. AIS-Vienna JV, Vienna International School JV, AIS-Budapest JV, ICSB Budapest, Danube, QSI-Bratislava, and Vienna Christian School will compete in boys and girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, boys soccer, tennis, and track & field at the both high school and middle school levels.
