College-Preparatory Program

The American college-preparatory academic program at the American International School-Salzburg requires that our students attain a significant level of intellectual development and also gain the personal skills and habits necessary for success at college. As a boarding school, AIS-Salzburg is able to address the entire student and his or her development during enrollment. This means that not only do we concern ourselves with grades, test scores, course load, and credits, but we also actively involve ourselves with the less tangible aspects of character that allow a student to concentrate, maintain a high level of motivation, and set appropriate personal goals and achieve them.

The academic program at AIS-Salzburg provides a broad education in all major subject areas each year of enrollment. All students are enrolled in a schedule of courses which include English, foreign languages, mathematics, science, social studies, an elective, and complete the schools Healthy Lifestyle Requirement each year. As students progress from the seventh through the twelfth grade, they gain an expansive understanding of the major fields of learning and human achievement. During the final two years of high school (11th and 12th grades), students are provided with course options which include study at the Advanced-Placement level in all subject areas.

The academic preparation at AIS-Salzburg is also uniquely challenging in the fact that all students are enrolled in two foreign-language courses each year throughout their period of attendance at AIS-Salzburg. All students are required to enroll in German and either French or Spanish.

Because of the intensity and breadth of the academic requirements of the school, we place special emphasis on the development of the abilities, habits, and attitudes which promote successful study and learning. Regular evening study halls in the dormitories, daily homework and out-of-class readings and other assignments, and tutorial assistance from both the faculty and other students are only a fraction of the structure for success provided. The faculty, resident staff, and administration of the school understand that quiet concentration, attentiveness, and care and concern for intellectual development and understanding are keystones of the educational endeavor.
